From the Manufacturer
Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460 (1/4/60). To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

Dr. Marten Wanna-Be
I just got a pair for Christmas after talking about them to a family member. I got very excited looking at the box as I took the wrapping off but the box was notably light-weight. Then I noticed a visible difference in the boots not having touched them yet. They looked like imposters even at first glance. I am not a shoe or boot connoisseur or snob but I do know I like quality. Examining them confirmed my unexpected let down. The leather is a lower grade that doesn't ever break-in and the soles feel to be of a stiffly cheaper rubber that wears faster. I took a look at the label to find unsurprisingly that they were made in China. Buy a new pair (made after 2003) if your after the name without the same quality. Buy a pre-2003 pair if you want a better pair of DMs.
Durable and Comfortable
I bought these for my husband who is as hard on his shoes as a teenager or worse. Docs seem to be one of the few boots that he can't destroy in 6 months, and he can normally wear them for about 2 years (mine last about 5 years or more for comparison). This boot seems to be just as durable if not better than his other Docs were, and the extra cushioning heel is a great bonus. The 'break-in' period for him is usually a week or so for his other Docs in the past, however these only took a day or two to get used to and he didn't get blisters on his heels. He loves the finish on the leather, and the leather itself seems to be more durable and thicker than some other styles he's had in the past. All said, I love these boots as much as he does, especially since I won't have to make him get a new pair for a long time. He's had them for 2 months now and they still look brand new, which is amazing for him. I highly recommend these boots for any man who is extremely rough on their footwear and needs durability and comfort.
Love these boots!
These boots are wonderful! Super comfy and look great! The leather did need to be broken in but it didn't take long at all. You wouldn't even know you're wearing a boot.
